treeosc~ models a tree as a hierarchy of stiff rods, each hinged on the tip of its parent with a rotational spring and a little damping. Excite the trunk or the leaves and listen to the summed sway of the canopy. At a simulation rate of one it is a tree in the wind. At rates in the hundreds or thousands, the resonances move up into pitch territory and it becomes a bank of coupled, inharmonic partials determined entirely by the shape of the tree.

The physics uses the exact mass matrix of the linked rods, so a joint feels the inertia of everything it carries and energy passes both ways between parents and children. Because that matrix is the true kinetic-energy metric, the system can only store or dissipate energy: no tree shape can blow up, however odd. A companion tree designer lets you draw the tree, see each rod’s natural frequency, and watch it move while it plays.
